Job Description:
The person hired for this position will perform functions essential to complete experiments on the muscle physiology and biomechanics of movement in soft-bodied marine invertebrates. These functions include maintaining research animals in saltwater aquaria, mixing physiological solutions, performing dissections to isolate tiny bundles of muscle cells, performing experiments to measure the contractile properties of muscle preparations, collecting and analyzing data, and writing weekly reports to summarize research findings to date.
Essential Functions:
Maintaining live marine invertebrates in both recirculating and flow-through seawater systems. Maintenance includes checking on water chemistry, doing water changes as needed, feeding animals, and cleaning tanks as needed.
Mixing physiological saline solutions, maintaining stocks of research chemicals and ordering more as needed, cleaning glassware as needed.
Dissecting tiny bundles of muscle cells from the muscular organs of interest and making muscle preparations from them. Measuring the contractile properties of the muscle preparations, including force-length and force-velocity relationships, and active and passive work loops.
Analyzing muscle physiological data, maintaining records of both raw and analyzed data, and preparing weekly brief reports that summarize the research findings to date.

Requirements:
Bachelors degree in Biology, Public Health or Neuroscience is required.
This is an entry level position, no prior work experience is required
Experience in studying the muscles of soft-bodied invertebrate
Experience using force transducers and length-controllers manufactured by Aurora Scientific Inc. (ASI) is preferred
Experience working with live squid or polychaete worms preferred
Experience working with muscle preparations from invertebrates preferred
Experience with Aurora Scientific Inc. Software is preferred
Ability and willingness to provide excellent service and to work in a collegial manner with students, faculty and staff, and other constituencies is essential.
