The Custodian at the Burlington School District works to provide a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for students and staff in which to teach, learn, and grow. Custodians will work within school buildings to prepare rooms for the beginning of each school day, upholding district standards of sanitation. Custodians report to the Director of Property Services.
The Essential Functions of this position include:
Selects appropriate equipment and supplies and sweeps and/or dust mops classrooms and corridors daily.
Replenishes classroom and restroom supplies (e.g. paper towels, soap, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring adequate quantities for daily use.
Maintains lavatories in a clean and sanitary condition. Sweeps, mops, and scrubs floors, walls, and partitions, cleans and deodorizes washbasins and other lavatory facilities. Refills towels, tissue, soap containers, etc.
Washes windows, inside and out.
Dust all school furniture and flat surfaces.
Changes light bulbs as necessary.
Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
Cleans all chalkboards.
Sweeps walkways, keeping them free of debris.
Participates in snow removal program by shoveling snow, or spreading chemicals, sweeping, or as otherwise directed.
Performs minor, job-related, maintenance on custodial equipment, classroom furniture, and fixtures (e.g. change vacuum cleaner belts, bags, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring proper functioning and usability of items.
Cares for heating, lighting, ventilating, and plumbing systems in their area of responsibility.
Collects and disposes of trash, scrap, and garbage and recycles materials.
Reports all instances of vandalism and items which require repairs or service to the Director of Property services, or designee.
Attends meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions.
Performs other duties as assigned.
The required education and experience for this position include:
Education
Minimum Required: High School Diploma or equivalent

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Working knowledge
Sufficient familiarity with the subject to know basic principles and terminology and to understand and solve simple problems.
General knowledge
Sufficient knowledge of a field to perform most work in normal situations. The work calls for comprehension of standard situations and includes knowledge of most of the significant aspects of the subject.
Thorough knowledge
Advanced knowledge of the subject matter. The work calls for sufficient comprehension of the subject area to solve unusual as well as common work problems, to be able to advise on technical matters and to serve as a resource on the subject for others in the organization.
Comprehensive knowledge
Requires complete mastery and understanding of the subject. This term should be used sparingly and only for unusually exacting or responsible positions required to originate hypotheses, concepts, or approaches.
List Specific Skills And/Or Abilities Required:
Ability to maintain a valid State Driver's license.
Ability to use brooms, brushes, mops, power-operated scrubbing machines, vacuum cleaners, buffers, shampooers, wet vacuums, liquid waxes & degreasers, dust absorbers, and other custodial supplies.
Ability to read and write at an acceptable level.
Ability to use and care for building service equipment and supplies according to written and oral instructions.
Ability to communicate courteously, efficiently, and effectively with a variety of individuals, including students, faculty, administrators, parents, and representatives of outside organizations.
Ability to adapt to changing work priorities.
Ability to meet deadlines and schedules.
Ability to work as part of a team.
Ability to perform work requiring moderate to heavy labor.
In addition to great health benefits and paid time off this full-time position starts at $16.50 - $18.50 per hour based on experience (plus applicable shift differential currently at $1.30 per hour). The hours for this 2nd shift position
are primarily from 2:30 pm - 11:00 pm Monday through Friday during the school year. Hours and work location are subject to change at any time to reflect facility needs.
