The responsibilities of a blue collar truck driver consist of driving defensively and handling hazardous road conditions, ensuring that the load is correctly placed and securing it by using ropes and chains to avoid damage to the truck or goods, calculating and estimating the weight of loads to comply with load limits, checking items against inventory, recording breakage and damage, collecting payments and issuing receipts, maintaining a log book with details of trips, including rest breaks on long trips, cleaning, inspecting and servicing vehicle, operating equipment on vehicle to load, unload and dispersing cargo or materials. Also, a blue collar truck driver should maintain radio or telephone contact with base or supervisor to receive instructions or be dispatched to new location.
A blue collar van driver should possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. with a safe driving record and should be capable of reading and interpreting road signs in English as well as possess extensive knowledge of the operations and features of assigned vehicle(s) and the ability to recognize vehicle maintenance needs and perform minor vehicle repairs.
