JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for assisting the Traffic Systems Technician in the installation, repair and maintenance of traffic control systems.
MAJOR DUTIES
• Performs technical duties in the maintenance of traffic systems as directed by the Traffic Systems Technician. (65%)
o Troubleshoots and performs installation, repair and maintenance of traffic signals.
o Troubleshoots and performs installation, repair and maintenance of street lights.
o Assists with the line location of traffic signal equipment.
o Monitors contractors performing work on traffic signals.
o Participates in on-call rotation for afterhours emergency requests (e.g. repair of traffic signals or signage).
• Performs other technical maintenance and repair duties. (25%)
o Assists with electrical service needs for City events.
o Performs electrical and mechanical maintenance on City facilities.
• Performs related duties. (10%)
o Demonstrates punctual, regular and reliable attendance.
o Attends meetings, workshops and training sessions.
o Provides innovative solutions to enhance current processes and procedures and/or resolve workplace issues.
o Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Knowledge of traffic signal operations and maintenance
• Knowledge of street light operations and maintenance.
• Knowledge of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, National Electric Code, and American Association of State Highway and Transportation regulations.
• Skill in the operation of computers and job related software.
• Skill in the repair and maintenance of electrical and mechanical systems.
• Skill in the utilization of bucket truck and other related equipment and tools.
• Skill in oral and written communication.
• Ability to work both independently and cooperatively with a team.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Traffic Systems Technician assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions, requiring the use of judgment. The supervisor spot-checks work as it is being accomplished for compliance with detailed and specific instructions, established procedures, and accuracy.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include the National Electric Code, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices , City and department policies and procedures, City of Auburn Core Values, City of Auburn Design and Construction Manual and Standards and Specifications, federal and state regulations and ADA guidelines. These guidelines are clear and specific while some may require judgment and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
• The work consists of related technical duties. Inclement weather, heavy traffic, and troubleshooting errors contribute to the complexity of the position.
• The purpose of this position is to perform technical duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic systems. Success in this position contributes to the safety and efficiency of City streets.

• Contacts are typically with co-workers, contractors, vendors, and members of the general public.
• Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
• The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping, or sitting. The employee frequently lifts light objects weighing less than 24 pounds and heavy objects weighing 25 or more pounds, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
• The work is typically performed in a stockroom or warehouse warehouse and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with one to three years' experience.
• Possession of or ability to obtain International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level 1 Certification within one year of employment.
• Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Alabama Class B Commercial Driver's license within six months of employment.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
