FLEET SUPERVISOR
DEFINITION The purpose of this position is to supervise and perform maintenance and mechanical repair work on diversified gasoline and diesel vehicles and heavy equipment.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives general supervision from Public Works Superintendent. Exercises supervision over Maintenance Workers-Mechanics.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBLITIES AND DUTIES —
Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Oversees and performs the repair of all street, water distribution, and construction trucks and equipment.
Oversees proper preventative maintenance on trucks and equipment.
Oversees and schedules repair that cannot be completed in-house.
Maintains the shop and tools in an orderly fashion.
Performs maintenance activities and repairs on other department vehicles as needed.
Cleans and maintains work areas after repairs are complete.
Oversees Inventory of all parts and tools.
Other Important Responsibilities and Duties
Maintains Fleet and Equipment inventory list.
Maintains and repairs equipment by washing, cleaning, changing the oil, repairing hoses, and changing flat tires.
Assists in snow removal.
Maintain repair logs on all vehicles.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Supervising employees.
Basic methods and techniques of general construction, maintenance, and repair related to the area of work assigned.
Equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned.
Methods and techniques of general construction and maintenance.
City infrastructure.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Ability to:
Repair equipment.
Perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work in the area of work assigned.
Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
Operate heavy machinery.
Supervise others.
Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Follow all safety rules and regulations of the Public Works Department.
Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
Making observations
Communicating with others
Traveling to various work locations
Operating and maintaining assigned equipment and vehicles
Maintain mental capacity which permits:
Making sound decisions and using good judgment
Determining and avoiding dangerous situations
Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
Walking, standing, bending, or crouching for extended periods of time
Lifting or moving moderate to heavy weights
Working under harsh weather conditions
Operating assigned equipment and vehicles
Effectively handle a work environment and work conditions which involve:
Exposure to dust and dirt
Inclement weather conditions
Working closely with others
High levels of noise
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES High school diploma or equivalent. Some experience performing public works Inventory and Fleet maintenance and operating heavy machinery is required. Missouri Class B Commercial Driver’s license is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environmental Conditions Travel from site to site; field environment; confined spaces; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, and inclement weather conditions; work around heavy construction equipment.
Physical Conditions Essential and other important duties and responsibilities may require maintaining a physical condition necessary for walking, standing, bending, pushing, crawling, crouching, and lifting heavy objects for prolonged periods of time; and the operation of motorized equipment and vehicles.
Tools and Equipment Tractors, trucks, backhoes, skid loaders, snow removal equipment, dump trucks, bore machines, road graders, rollers, track hoes, oil distributors, jack hammers, hydrostatic rollers, sweepers, cranes, dozers, and a variety of hand tools.
Miscellaneous Requirements
Must successfully complete pre-employment physical and substance abuse testing.
Will be subject to random substance abuse testing.
