Duties These positions are located within the Pharmacy Service at the VA Boston Healthcare System at the campuses listed below:

West Roxbury, MA - Pharmacy Technician & Anticoagulation Clinical Pharmacy Technician
Anticoagulation Clinical Pharmacy Technician (West Roxbury) - The primary functions include direct patient care, telephone logistical support, management of daily clinic schedule and flow, basic medication and chart reviews, supplemental patient education communication, clinical dashboard monitoring, and Quality Assurance monitoring, data analysis, and presentation of reports. All assigned clinical activities and functions will be completed in accordance with approved clinical pharmacy protocols and anticoagulation protocols and guidelines and under the immediate supervision of a pharmacist. This technician, as a member of the Anticoagulation Program functions under the of the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist (CPS), Anticoagulation Program Manager, and officially reports to the Associate Chief of Pharmacy, Clinical Services. When assigned, the pharmacy technician may rotate through all technician work assignments within the pharmacy section at all VA Boston Healthcare System locations. Additional duties may include various administrative and/or clinical or other assignments at the discretion of the supervisor. If needed, this position could be based at any or all locations within the VA Boston Healthcare System. (Note: You are expected to travel for this position.)



Pharmacy Technician - (Jamaica Plain & West Roxbury) no travel required

Provides a variety of services at multiple points of care. When assigned, the pharmacy technician rotates through all work assignments within the pharmacy section. The employee is required to independently manage and complete all competencies and position requirements. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment.
Collects and maintains records of staff training, competencies, logs and other records.
Prepares various reports on regular basis for supervisor.
Compliance and coordination of procurement, reverse distribution, and formulary processes and programs.
Assists with initiating and maintaining all required drug file and inventory changes to resolve and improve patient care needs.
Complies with investigational drug policies and procedures.
Independently gathers, evaluates, and analyzes data to generate reports and/or for other projects/statistical purposes.
Evaluates and analyzes workflow.
Coordinates technician work activities and scheduling.
Independently reviews, understands, and complies fully with all policies, procedures, handbooks, and other guidance.
Trains and educates new employees and existing staff.
Assists the supervisor with administrative assistance and service requirements, record management, and other administrative assignments.
Provides and coordinates educational programs to train staff and patients.
Assists with interviewing potential candidates for employment.
Provides and coordinates educational programs to train staff and patients.
May be assigned to narcotics vault or hazardous and non-hazardous compounding suites as needed.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.
Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.
English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).



Grade Determinations: One-year experience at the next lower level (GS-6). Experience includes but is not limited to: successfully and consistently demonstrate the exercise of independent technical judgment (without the need for readily available supervision) as well as comprehensive and thorough working knowledge of the most complex or difficult practices and procedures, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs at the GS-7 level and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk(*)

3. Knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff.

Physical Requirements: Principle duties of this position require repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., preparing prescriptions, use of a computer keyboard, etc.). May require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 44lbs.), including boxes, equipment, medical supplies, stock boxes etc.; stooping or kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, remove and replace items on lower shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers, etc.); sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours). Ability to operate automation. Normal ranges of hearing and vision are required to perform work and communicate effectively. An ability to perform tasks requiring rapid mental and muscular coordination functions simultaneously is necessary. Must be physically capable of operating various types of equipment used for the job.
