Job Title: Director of Public Works

Reports to: City Manager
JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the City Manager, the Director of Public Works is responsible for the administrative work in directing and supervising all divisions of the Public Works Department which include operation/maintenance of streets, water & sewer distribution, water & wastewater plant, and building maintenance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES: Directs and evaluates the activities of the division supervisors of public works, which includes, planning, supervising, and coordinating the design, construction and maintenance of water, sewer, streets, and maintenance. Position requires mature and professional judgement, tact, resourcefulness, initiative, and adherence to a common code of ethics common public practices above and beyond normal expectation and overall principles of the trade. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. The major emphasis of work is on policy development and overall administration and coordination. Supervision is exercised directly or thru subordinates over a large staff of technical, operational, and supporting personnel; confers with City Manager City in all matters of policy, activities, plans, goals, objective, and general departmental direction; participates in the preparation of specifications for the purchase of materials and equipment. Continually reviewing departmental operations efficiency and ensures compliance with state and federal regulations regarding operations of the department. Performs other duties, tasks and responsibilities as may be assigned.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERETIFICATES, AND/OR LICENSE: Bachelor’s Degree preferred; Minimum Five years related experience and/or training in street construction/maintenance and water utilities management operations; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have a Current Texas Driver’s License
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Experience in construction, operation and maintenance of public works infrastructures, administrative ability; and supervisory experience, skilled in public presentations, coordination and negotiations.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: The ability to read and interpret documentation such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense, and understanding, to carry out instructions. Ability to solve practical problems and interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

WORK ENVIROMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places and extreme cold.
