u003cstrongu003eGeneral Summary:u003c/strongu003eu003cbru003eu003cbru003eThe Welder I position performs necessary operations required to form, fit and join various metals used in manufacturing, modifying and repairing trainer systems and relatedu003cbru003e projects. Designs and fabricates components; makes templates, simple holding devices, and fixtures as necessary to align and hold metal parts to be welded. Applies conceptual skills to visualize the item to be fabricated. Works from shop sketches, engineering drawings or other technical data for dimensional and functional characteristics. The welder must rely on basic trade knowledge and the ability to improvise trade techniques.u003cbru003eu003cbru003eu003cstrongu003eEssential Job Functions:u003c/strongu003eu003cbru003eu003cbru003e• Develop work procedures for fabricating welded assemblies from engineering drawings, airframes service changes, bulletins, contractor and vendor drawings and repair manuals.u003cbru003e • May work from existing fabricated assemblies when no other technical data exists, develops dimensional, angular or other measurements from the assemblies.u003cbru003e • Determine work sequence, welding methods when not specifically called out, equipment needs and material requirements.u003cbru003e • Cut metal (bar stock, tubing, plate, sheet, extruded shapes, structural steel, etc.) to dimensions and angles required to fabricate subassemblies and end assemblies.u003cbru003e • Operate shop equipment such as chop saws, cutting torches, grinders, etc.u003cbru003e • Use fixtures and holding devices to align and hold work pieces for welding.u003cbru003e • Required to design and make the fixtures and holding devices when none exists.u003cbru003e • Lay out and cuts component parts as required to fit, assemble and weld them together.u003cbru003e • Assure that matting surfaces to be welded are clean and free from corrosion that would inhibit a good weld.u003cbru003e • Configure joint geometry by grinding angles or V''s to accommodate appropriate weld beads.u003cbru003e • Grind down and removes excess weld bead to prepare the assembly/subassembly for painting.u003cbru003e • Maintain welding equipment in a good, ready-to-use condition at all times. Provides cleaning, preservation and protection to welding tips, valves, regulators, etc. to avoid damage or deterioration.u003cbru003e • Must be capable of safely handling government furnished equipment and materials.u003cbru003e • Must be available to work a standard weekly schedule with overtime as required.u003cbru003e • Performs other duties as required.u003cbru003eu003cbru003eJob Requirementsu003cbru003eu003cbru003eKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities:u003cbru003eu003cbru003e• Requires good comprehension in reading, interpreting drawings, repair manuals, relatedu003cbru003e technical data and a thorough knowledge of and skill in the use of tools and techniques used in preparing and welding fabricated assemblies.u003cbru003e • Requires a good knowledge of shop mathematics, ability to lay out, align, fit and assemble component parts.u003cbru003e • Must have the ability to assist with design and fabrication of one of a kind trainers and/or components.u003cbru003e • Must be proficient in use of hand tools common to the welding trade such as protractors, rulers, dividers, calipers, levels, templates, etc., and powered tools such as bench and hand held grinders.u003cbru003e • When specific welding direction is not called out in applicable directives or drawings, applies trade knowledge to determine appropriate steps to take in the welding process.u003cbru003e • Requires knowledge of probable effects of various loads and stresses applied to structures such as compression, torque, tensile, and shear, and the ability to recognize an overloaded or overstressed condition, and recommend or take corrective action as necessary.u003cbru003e • Assist other workers as part of a team.u003cbru003eu003cbru003e• Must be able to obtain a security clearance as required by the contract.u003cbru003eu003cbru003eu003cstrongu003eEducation and Experience:u003c/strongu003eu003cbru003eu003cbru003e• High School Diploma or equivalent.u003cbru003e • Apprenticeship and/or Trade School in Welding plus 2 years experience.u003cbru003eu003cbru003eWe are equal opportunity/affirmative action employers, committed to diversity in the workplace.
