Overview
Set-up, adjust and operate various sizes and types of punch presses to produce parts in accordance with specifications. Set, align and secure dies, set ram stroke, etc. to perform such operations as blank, shear, punch, form, draw, upset etc. in progressive, compound, cam acting or combination dies of complicated design. Set stripper, ejecting and safety devices, mechanical hitch, rook, servo feeds. Program all sensoring and tonnage monitors. Convert multi-purpose dies and improvise standard set-ups for special adaptations when required. Work from drawings and templates. Use measuring instruments incidental to operations. Proceed with a minimum of supervision and direction. Work is subject to process and final inspection.
Responsibilities
Selects and aligns dies in press according to specifications.
Adjusts ram stroke to specified length.
Positions work piece against fixtures or stops on machine bed or on die.
Starts press and observes operation to detect misalignment or malfunction.
Regulates air pressure and oil pressure.
Inspects work pieces for conformance to specifications and adjusts machine to correct errors.
Packages parts in appropriate containers.
Cleans and lubricates machines.
Qualifications
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED). One to three months related experience and/or training is preferred. Experience with air feed, roll feed, and secondary operations, and the ability to do fast setups within the department is preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals written in English. Ability to write routing reports and correspondence in English. Ability to speak effectively in English before groups.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to understand and convert to metric. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Must be able to read blueprints. Should be familiar with inspection equipment such as venire and micrometer.
