Job Description Summary
Under general direction, the Laboratory Technician performs analytical procedures used in the testing of samples at various wastewater treatment stages of the Burbank Water Reclamation Plant (BWRP), its receiving surface waters, and Industrial Source Reduction and Control Program (ISRCP). Under general supervision, work includes sample preparation, sampling, and analysis of compliance and process control samples used in support of the wastewater treatment operation and ISRCP. The individual will operate, maintain, and calibrate instruments and equipment for laboratory analysis. Individuals must apply knowledge of the principles and practices of chemistry, biology, microbiology, and mathematics required in an analytical laboratory; use standard laboratory practices and QA/QC procedures, keep detailed and accurate records, and help maintain laboratory accreditation. The Lab Technician provides technical assistance to other areas of the lab as well as the process control function of the treatment facility.
Primary Duties / Responsibilities
Laboratory Technician will perform facility or field sample collection and chemical, bacertiological, and physical laboratory tests to support process control and regulatory compliance with wastewater treatment, water recycling. This includes preparation of analytical standard solutions and reagents used for analysis.
Uses sample chains of custody and understands there need and essential purpose.
Continually reviews and scrutinizes standardized operating procedures and methods used in analyses.
May be required to interpret and summarize data and prepare oral and written reports of analytical activities for management as needed or assigned.
Reports issues with laboratory instruments and equipment and may perform basic troubleshooting.
Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
Participates in shared responsibilities to maintain laboratory programs including quality assurance, safety, training, and housekeeping.
Tracks sample status, enters and/or validates analytical data in the LIMS database.
Qualifications Education / Experience / Background
Associates degree in Chemistry, Biology, or related field from an accredited university or college is required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
Minimum of one (1) to three (3) years experience in an environmental laboratory performing chemical, biological, or physical analyses on aqueous samples using EPA, ASTM, or Standard Methods for the Examination of Water or Wastewater. Experience in a water or wastewater treatment plant is highly desirable.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Must have practical, operational knowledge of laboratory tasks, techniques, equipment, and terminology used in environmental laboratories. Working knowledge of basic principles and practices of chemical, physical and microbiological analysis of water or wastewater preferred.
Must be familiar with EPA and Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater.
Must understand and follow the laboratory's quality assurance and quality control program requirements for the California regulatory agencies.
Ability to scrutinize analytical data and make sound decisions regarding proper laboratory operation or, if not confident, seek advice/clarification from Lead Laboratory staff before proceeding.
Must be able to make chemical solutions, perform standard chemical calculations, and perform routine mathematical and statistical calculations.
Must be familiar with Windows operating systems, , a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS),, and knowledge of the Google operating platform and programs preferred.
Ability to effectively use clear communication, both orally and in written reports; communicate professionally and respectfully to all staff, City representatives, contractors, visitors, etc. at all times.
Report questionable/problematic issues to lead staff and management as soon as possible in areas including: data QA/QC, equipment operation/maintenance, and logistics. This list is for example purposes only and includes other subjects related to lab operations.
Ability to effectively work in a team-based organization is required; work effectively with others in solving problems; willing to accept suggestions from team members, and offer expertise as needed.
Willing to work holidays, weekends, and overtime as assigned or needed.
Required Certification / Licenses / Training
Must obtain California Water Environment Association (CWEA) certification as a Grade I Laboratory Analyst within 12 months of hire.
