Facilities Technician
to join their team. This position performs work of lower level facilities positions and works autonomously requiring minimal supervision, provides direct customer service to members of the campus and to the community at large. This position builds and maintains a work atmosphere of trust and respect by establishing open communication among team members; recognizing the value of individual differences at all levels of the organization; taking steps to prevent destructive conflict and handling conflict in an appropriate manner; listening and responding appropriately to the needs, feelings and capabilities of all individuals; and providing support and assistance to team members.
The Facilities Technician performs advanced custodial work or responsibilities that are highly complex in nature (ex: an individual who has the ability and is called upon to deep clean, polish, seal, finish, etc. any type of flooring on a consistent basis). This position must be able to effectively multitask and meet provided deadlines. This position submits time and material estimates for special projects, and performs multiple specialized duties.
The Facilities Technician will provide supervision of Building Services student workers (typically, six or more). Responsibilities associated with this assignment include assigning tasks; coordinating custodial services; coordinating event set-up services; conducting general training; inspecting the work completed by others; provides feedback regarding hiring, disciplining, recognizing, and terminating student employees; performs evaluations of student workers; interviews perspective student employees and maintains work and employee files.
Required Skills
Knowledge and skill equivalent to a high school education.
Knowledge, skill and ability required to perform duties and responsibilities of lower level facilities positions.
Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain a safe work environment; work effectively in a team environment; work effectively when by themselves to manage the operations of the building; create and maintain a work atmosphere of trust and respect with all team members.
Ability to work with a variety of diverse groups of individuals effectively; read instructions, safety information, policies and procedures.
Demonstrated skill in customer service; written and interpersonal communication, listening and oral communication; organization and time-management.
Ability to operate specialized equipment, provide general training where appropriate, and maintain appropriate records.
Ability to develop and obtain knowledge of specialized custodial applications, computerized mechanical control systems (Johnson Controls) and computerized room reservation software (Event Management System).
Physical Requirements

Lifting: Ground to 60 inches, up to 50 lbs. Ground to 30 inches, 80 lbs.
Carrying: Front carry up to 50 lbs. for 10 feet or less.
Right and left hand carry up to 75 lbs. for wheelbarrow handling.
Pushing and pulling forces required (pushing and pulling materials, and during the use of tools): 100 lbs. sustained.
Repetitive squatting on both even and uneven surfaces.
3 minute overhead work from various positions (standing, crouching, or kneeling).
Static forward bending from a standing, crouching or kneeling position while using tools.
Trunk rotation from a standing or kneeling position.
Balancing when climbing and working on a ladder.
Walking various distances, continuously, throughout the day on even and uneven surfaces.
Use of various grip circumferences and strengths as well as static grip positions during the use of various tools (4 1/2 to 5 1/2 circumference needing an average of 50 lbs. of grip force) and while manipulating various work materials (maximum 100 lbs.).
Use of foot controls and hand controls to drive and operate light and heavy machinery.
Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment
Minimum Required Experience
High School diploma and three (3) years experience in directly related custodial experience, or a combination of experience and education.
Preferred Qualifications
Three (3) years of mid to upper level custodial experience.
Supervisory experience, especially of college age students.
Experience in general building maintenance and repair.
Ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment.
Ability to supervise others in the completion of custodial duties; event set-up duties; provide meaningful evaluations; provide general training where appropriate; operate specialized equipment; maintain appropriate records; and develop and obtain specialized custodial knowledge.
Knowledge of and ability to understand UM and UC Policies and student employment guidelines.
