In particular, we are exploring the mechanisms responsible for visual suppression in a disease that affects children called strabismus (crossed eyes). \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003eThe Lab Assistant II will work closely with all laboratory members in various aspects of research, including assistance with training of monkeys for experiments, provision of technical support, ordering of supplies and maintaining laboratory inventory, and general oversight to ensure the smooth running of laboratory operations and organization. The laboratory is located at the Parnassus Campus of the University of California, San Francisco. \u003cbr/\u003eThis individual maintains records and files pertaining to equipment, supplies, and lab compliance with regulatory agencies. The Department of Ophthalmology is a one of the largest recipients of federal grant funds among peer departments and has been in the top 10 in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, currently ranking #2. Additionally, we have been the #1 recipient of the Research to Prevent Blindness funding nationwide. Ophthalmology’s annual patient charges reach $65,000,000 with a wRVU total of 115,000. The Department’s overall operating budget is approximately $27,000,000 per year. Ophthalmology conducts its patient care, teaching, research, and public service activities currently at multiple UCSF campuses: Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Veteran’s Administration Medical Center (VAMC), Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG), and Benioff Children’s Hospital at Mission Bay. The Department currently occupies over 60,000 of assignable square feet of space at various sites across UCSF campuses for research, academic and clinical activities. In the fall of 2020, our Department will move the new state-of-the-art Center for Vision Neurosciences building in Mission Bay. The Department supports 30 full-time clinical faculty, 10 basic scientists, over 50 volunteer and visiting faculty. Each year, we train over 15 residents, 7 clinical fellows, and approximately 20 postdoctoral scholars and graduate students.
