JOB OVERVIEW

Conducts fire inspections to ensure compliance with accepted fire prevention and protection codes and standards. Conducts fire/life safety training programs and evacuation drills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

*Conducts inspections to assure compliance with applicable national, state and local building, fire and life safety codes, and standards. Formulates formal reports in response to those issues identified as deficiencies and recommends corrective measures. Applies regulations, standards, and sound fire prevention practices to detect hazardous operations and conditions, recommends proper fire prevention measures to eliminate or minimize the possibility of injury to personnel and damage to property. *Works public assembly events (e.g. football, basketball, concerts, graduations, ceremonies, dignitary visits, etc. and other types of events) that take place during the week, evenings, nights, and weekends for the purpose of assuring that applicable fire/life safety requirements are observed an enforced *Conducts inspections of fire protection/detection systems to assure code required testing and maintenance is being performed. Assists with testing of life safety systems. Provides local fire departments with pre-planning information. Responds to reports of fire and fire alarms to coordinate emergency response of responding fire companies. *Examines building plans and specifications to evaluate fire resistance, means of egress, segregation of hazardous areas, and occupancy. Ensure compliance with applicable fire safety and construction standards in projects involving modification, maintenance, repair or construction of facilities and equipment. *Assists with investigations of fires, and hazardous condition, analyzing precipitating factors and fire cause data in order to develop specific causal relationships and methods for prevention.  *Performs life safety duties and inspections before, during, and after events that take place during evenings, nights, holidays and weekends. *Required to perform fire watch and inspection duties on evenings and weekends. *Act as the representative with external agencies pertaining to fire and life safety issues. *Subject to being on call or called back to work. Required to work flexible hours and/or overtime during evenings, nights, and weekends as required. *Perform related duties based on departmental need. This job description can be changed at any time.

REQUIRED EDUCATION

*Associate's Degree in Fire Science or related field. *Four (4) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

REQUIRED TRAININGS/CERTIFICATIONS

*Ohio Fire Safety Inspector and Ohio Firefighter II certification is required at time of hire and must be maintained throughout employment. *Must pass background investigation and no criminal record. *Must have a current valid state operator's license with acceptable driving record. *Must pass background investigation and polygraph exam.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

Must have at least two (2) years' experience in conducting, documenting and reporting fire and life safety inspections.

*Twenty-four hour on-call responsibilities; may be exposed to hazardous materials or conditions. *Sitting - Continuously *Repetitive hand motion (such as typing) - Continuously *Hearing, listening - Often *Talking - Often *Standing - Often *Walking - Often *Bending - Often *Stooping - Often *Climbing stairs/ladders - Often *Kneeling, squatting - Often *Crouching - Often *Crawling - Often *Reaching overhead - Often *Pulling, pushing - Often *Shoveling - Seldom *Lifting - up to 20 pounds - Seldom *Outdoor Environment: Employees work outdoors and may not be protected from weather conditions. *Noise: There is sufficient noise to cause you to shout in order to be heard above the noise level. *Hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts of machinery or tools used to perform work, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals. *Atmospheric Conditions: Conditions that affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation. *Close Quarters: Employees are frequently required to work in crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, sewage and water line pipes, and other areas that could cause claustrophobia.
