SUMMARY

Bering Straits Technical Services, a subsidiary of Bering Straits Native Corporation, is currently seeking a qualified Heavy Equipment Mechanic/Welder/Fabricator for Contract #

W912D0-18-008/

Ft. Wainwright, AK. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic/Welder/Fabricator analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds and maintains power equipment, such as diesel motors and generators, dump trucks, backhoes, payloaders, graders, snow equipment, pumps, compressors, lifts, fuel dispensing systems, small engine, and commercial grade lawn equipment.  This position will primarily conduct refuse container maintenance, weld/repair heavy equipment, and fabricate components/parts necessary for project completion.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Essential Duties and Responsibilities are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed for this position, and are

intended to reflect all duties performed within the job. Other duties may be assigned.

Operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects. Dismantles and reassembles equipment, using hoists and hand tools

Examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges

Tests overhauled equipment to insure operating efficiency

Welds broken parts and structural members

Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS - EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION

Required (Minimum) Qualifications

High school diploma

Shall have a current and valid State driver's license covering the type of vehicle or equipment being used

Must maintain current commercial driver’s license for the type of vehicle being operated

Minimum three years prior experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

Basic Computer Skills

Familiar with all welding processes including stainless and aluminum

Familiar with carbon arc gouging (air arc)

Familiar with cutting using oxy/acetylene torches and plasma cutters

Able to read blueprints/drawings, take measurements ,plan layout fabrication procedures

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee is occasionally required to stand; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work Environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be borne by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

The employee will normally work in a temperature-controlled office environment, with frequent exposure to electronic office equipment. During visits to areas of operations, may be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather conditions.  Is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

No supervisory responsibilities.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFYING FACTORS

As a condition of employment, may be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening, as well as have acceptable reference and background check results to obtain access to military base. Must have reliable transportation to/from work a necessity and must be able to obtain access to military installations.
