Maintenance Engineer

to join their team. This position provides maintenance and operational support for efficient steam and electrical production. The position is under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor II and operates, maintains, repairs and replaces boiler parts, piping and auxiliary devices; the steam distribution systems and auxiliaries; condensate systems and auxiliaries; and the turbine side of the electrical generation system and auxiliaries.

Additional responsibilities include:

Check small heating boilers on campus

Clean the plant and shop as needed

Perform boiler water and domestic water testing.

Operate boilers for fireman on leave, and once per week.

Perform the duties of the plant supervisor during his absence.

Take condensate, water, and electric meter readings monthly for campus buildings.

Required Skills

Knowledge of industrial safety and ability to work safely at all times.

Ability to work well and get along with others.

Capability to read blueprints and equipment specifications.

In depth knowledge of water treatment testing and control procedures.

Excellent analytical ability and industrial equipment troubleshooting skills.

Knowledge of boiler and generator casualty control procedures.

Ability to meet required physical mobility and physical demands

Occasional heavy lifting, ladder climbing and working from ladders and platforms, which requires mobility and physical demands.

Ability to craw, stoop, twist and bend to access work sites.

Ability to work in high-temperature environments, work safely in a high noise environments, work rotating shifts.

Ability to climb and craw into the interior of boilers and vessels (confined space) though a standard access hatch.

Ability to work while wearing PPE including respirators.

Ability to walk four (4) miles in one shift for meter reading duties.

Physical Requirements

(Qualified candidates must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform the primary functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.)

Lifting: Ground to 48 inches, up to 50 pounds. Ground to overhead, up to 15 pounds.

Carrying: Front carry up to 50 pounds for 50 feet or less.

Pushing/Pulling: (during the use of tools and pushing/pulling hand trucks). Push and pull forces required, 70 pounds sustained.

Static trunk forward bending and twisting from a standing position while using tools.

Reaching with your arms in all directions, including overhead.

Balancing when climbing and working on a ladder or scaffold.

Walking various distances throughout the day on even and uneven surfaces, distances up to 1000 feet for the fireman, and 35,000 feet for the fitter & foreman.

Crawling on hands and knees, up to 15 feet.

Use of various grip circumferences and strengths as well as static grip positions during the use of various tools (4 1/2 to 5 1/2 circumference needing an average of 50 pounds of grip force) and while manipulating various work materials (maximum 65 pounds).

Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment

Minimum Required Experience

High school education, minimum four (4) years of experience operating and maintaining high-pressure boilers and pressure vessels requiring a first class license to operate.

Boiler and turbine generator operation and maintenance experience.

Licensed as a First Class Boiler Operator in the State of Montana.

Maintain a Montana State Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to inspect the plant and steam distribution system and recognize and report irregularities to the plant supervisor.

Ability to interpret mechanical and electrical prints, schematics, and instruction manuals for troubleshooting and maintenance duties.

Ability to work with other crafts to quickly and safely accomplish maintenance tasks.

The Heating Plant is responsible for generating and supplying steam to buildings on campus for heating, cooking, sterilizing, hot water and electrical generation. We provide repair, replacement, and preventative maintenance of all related equipment in boiler room, turbine room, distribution system, and mechanical rooms throughout campus.
