This is specialized field work in a variety of utilities service functions working in a lead capacity with one or more semi-skilled employees. Responsibilities include installing, testing, maintaining, and repairing various size and types of water meters and backflow preventers. Employee may also assist in installing, maintaining and repairing water distribution and sewer collection systems. Employee must establish priorities in completing repair work and may be required to be on call and to work afterhours, weekends, and holidays.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to train personnel in testing and repairing meters and backflow preventers.
Considerable knowledge of maintaining and repairing water meters and backflow devices.
Ability to repair leaks and utilize the various tools used in repairing and testing meters and backflow preventers; and evaluate systems to determine meter size.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices associated with operating and maintaining water distribution and sewer collection systems.
Ability to read blue prints and system piping maps.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards of working with mechanical machinery and equipment.
Considerable knowledge of material, tools, machinery and equipment used to install, maintain, and repair water distribution and sewer collection systems components.
Ability to physically perform assigned duties; perform heavy manual work in all weather conditions.
Ability to lift, carry, pull, push, and maneuver bulky and heavy materials; lift objects up to 75 pounds and routinely lift up to 50 pounds overhead.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees.
Training, Certification, and Experience
High School Diploma or GED.
Two years experience in installing, repairing and maintaining water meters, service lines, backflow preventers and other components of the water distribution system.
One-year experience in house plumbing.
Or, an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Special Requirements
Valid Florida driver’s license.
Possess a valid Florida Commercial “B” Driver’s License, or ability to obtain within six months of employment.
Required for Water Distribution Maintenance, a Florida Water & Pollution Control Operators Association (FWPCOA) Water Distribution Class “C” Certification or obtain other water distribution certification.
Required for Water Distribution Maintenance, a Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Level 3 Water Distribution Operator license.
