JOB OVERVIEW
The University of Cincinnati Department of Biological Sciences is seeking a Greenhouse Manager to oversee our modern greenhouse facility. This position is responsible for managing the daily greenhouse operation including: maintaining daily reports of greenhouse conditions/activities; working with researchers to facilitate their projects; assisting educators with plant-based courses; training and supervising 2-5 student workers and volunteers; integrated pest management, keeping mandated pesticide application records, ordering supplies including chemicals and pesticides; maintaining inventory lists and required MSDS sheets; supervising greenhouse safety/hygiene practices; design/oversee interiorscapes in various locations; and propagate, prune, and perform other hands-on work that is beyond the skill level of assistants.
The position is 80% FTE and the person is expected to work 32 hours per week, including availability on occasional weekends, as necessary. This position is eligible for benefits and also for three credits of tuition remission each semester.
The Greenhouse Manager reports to the Department Head of Biological Sciences and also designs, implements, and administers the greenhouse space and usage guidelines. It is also expected that the Manager will be proactive in suggesting improvements to the facility and implementing repairs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
*Manage, design, develop, modify and present programs. Perform program needs assessment and make recommendations. *Implement policies and procedures. *Maintain budget, prepare contracts, approve and monitor expenditures, prepare budget requests and financial reports. *Act as liaison to internal departments, external entities and community organizations. *May prepare and edit reports and/or newsletters and develop publication materials. *May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.). *Perform related duties based on departmental need.
REQUIRED EDUCATION
*Bachelor's Degree. *Seven (7) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
*Three (3) years of experience in program development or business administration. *May require supervision experience.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS CONSIDERED
*An advanced degree, such as a MS in Horticulture, Botany, or Biology is a plus, as well as an ability to contribute to departmental outreach activities. *Familiar with experiments and the need for controlled conditions as well as propagating and maintaining plants for plant-related courses in a time-sensitive manner. *Certified or willing to be certified in pesticide application for Commercial Greenhouses in Ohio (Ohio 6d certification) within 3 months of employment. *Three (3) years of prior experience in greenhouse management and/or horticulture
