University of Montana Police Department (UMPD)
invites applications for a
Police Officer Commissioned
to join their team. This position performs a variety of quality law enforcement duties, such as:
Patrolling campus and campus related facilities to enforce all University regulation, Federal and state laws
Investigate criminal activity and accidents
Responding to and investigating in resident halls or family housing disturbances.
Provide safety and security by unlocking doors, inspecting campus facilities for safety, health and fire hazards.
Provide crime prevention functions to the University community by providing money escorts, person escorts in the hours of darkness and giving crime prevention presentations.
Required Skills
Knowledge of basic law enforcement practices, State and Federal laws as well as University policies and procedures
Possess excellent interpersonal communication skills
Demonstrate good oral and written communication skills
Demonstrate problem solving and conflict resolution skills
Report writing skills and observation skills
Ability to remain calm and impartial during difficult situations
Knowledge of basic first aid
Ability to identify safety hazards, security violations and knowledge of campus facilities
Knowledge of fire and safety regulations and policies
Ability to operate specialized police patrol equipment and alarms
Basic knowledge of Uniform traffic code, Montana Laws
Infrequent lifting, running, strength required to effect arrest, ability to remain standing and walk for extended periods, ability to remain outdoors in all climate conditions
Upon extension of a conditional employment offer, the successful candidate must be able to pass a physical examination by a physician chosen by the University of Montana-Missoula
Minimum Required Experience
High school graduate (or equivalent certification); must be a citizen of the United States; and at least 18 years of age, as provided in Montana Code Annotated 7-32-303.
Must not have been convicted of a crime where incumbent could have been imprisoned in a federal or state penitentiary.
Must have current Montana P.O.S.T. certification or certification in another state and able to meet Legal Equivalency for Montana Peace Officer Basic.
Must have CPR and First Aid certified or the ability to become certified within 6 months.
A detailed background investigation, including fingerprinting, is required for employment.
All public safety officer positions have minimum requirements established by Montana law and the Montana Public Safety Officer Standards and Training (POST) Council.
Preferred Qualifications
Law Enforcement experience working with a diverse population on a institution of higher learning
Knowledge of the Jeanne Clery Act and requirements of the Clery Act in Campus Law Enforcement
Knowledge of Title IX requirements on universities and their connections with Campus Law Enforcement
CPR and First Aid certified or the ability to become certified.
