What’s the role?
The Specialist role is a laboratory technician supporting six work streams in the Quality Measurements (lab) organization at Deer Park Refinery. The run and maintain role of this position consists of:
Daily crude tanks screening for organic chlorides. This is an essential validation to prevent incursion of organic chlorides into the distilling unit and consequential corrosion/process safety impacts.
Raman support to collect primary data for to maintain or build new models for online analyzers. This is a goal for Deer Park to continue in the Raman journey to drive margin.
Sour water analyses by XRF, ICP and IC techniques for corrosion monitoring. Daily samples are measured, and results monitored by PEI.
Non routine method development with Process Chemists to evaluate new chemistry or methods supporting process unit abnormal situation or longer-term process unit reliability efforts.
Normal run and maintain activities for instrument maintenance, SQC, and instrument troubleshooting.
Start up support for Refinery unit.
The role works in a team environment with other specialists (technicians) and the Refinery Process Chemist. There is a routine and non-routine aspect of the role.
Dimensions:
Key challenges will be coordinating work across all six work streams with prioritization and alignment with key stakeholders (e.g., E&S, Process Engineering, Environmental). This role will also serve as a back up to the Crude Flex bench as needed to cover vacations and turnarounds.
Skills & Requirements
What we need from you -
Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
Minimum Associate degree in Chemistry, Biology, or related scientific field of study is preferred.
Minimum three (3) years related work experience in Petrochemical or Refinery Laboratory
Demonstrated background in safely working in a refinery/chemicals laboratory environment (skilled).
Demonstrated knowledge and abilities with Gas Chromatography and Titrations (skilled).
Understanding of Statistical Quality Control concepts (skilled).
Demonstrated abilities to troubleshoot instrumentation and method related issues (knowledge).
Demonstrated communication and stakeholder management abilities

Shell Oil Company, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell plc, has reached an agreement for the sale of its interest in Deer Park Refining Limited Partnership, a 50-50 joint venture between Shell Oil Company and P.M.I. Norteamerica, S.A. De C.V. (a subsidiary of Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex). The transaction will transfer Shell’s interest in the partnership, and therefore full ownership of the refinery, to Pemex, subject
to regulatory approvals. Employees assigned to the Refinery assets in scope for divestment will be offered employment by Pemex with effect upon closing in accordance with the transaction. The transaction is expected to close in Q4 2021.
